Sunday Spotlight: Shirley Stary Celebrates 10 Years at Lakeside

shirley-staryBefore the evening perfor­mances at Hoover Auditori­um, Shirley Stary is running from the lobby to backstage, making sure that everything is ready for the show.

She is taking care of final details here and there and pre­paring her introduction for the upcoming performance. When the clock hits 8:15 p.m., Stary, senior vice president of Pro­gramming at Lakeside, heads out onto the stage.

Even though she talks for just a few minutes, Stary has the bright look in her eyes that somebody has when they love what they do.

Stary first visited Lakeside in 2001, when she was go­ing through a very hard time in her life. She had recently divorced and was coming to Lakeside for counseling with the Rev. Ruth Shannon, a longtime Lakesider.

Preacher of the Week: The Rev. Laurie Haller

Laurie HallerEveryone experiences the burnout of life’s daily routine and hectic schedule. The Rev. Laurie Haller, Preacher of the Week from August 16-21, will share a special message with Lakesiders about how she rediscovered play and purpose during those times of burnout.

A native of Birmingham, Mich., the Rev. Haller has served churches for the past 32 years. She currently is the Senior Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Birmingham.

She has traveled to Cuba, Haiti and Zimbabwe for mission trips and has led four trips to Israel.

The Rev. Haller is no stranger to the Chautauqua experience; she has also preached at Bay View Assembly in Petoskey, Mich., a sister Chautauqua.
