Mahls Encourage Giving

Staff Blogger: Mallory Glenn, Advancement/Communications Intern

Tim and Cindy Mahl are sitting on their new porch as their three fluffy spaniels of varying shades skitter about, occasionally jumping into their laps or barking at squirrels. While they’re currently permanent residents of Avon, Ohio, the Mahls explain that Lakeside is where they feel most at home.

“We love the sense of community in Lakeside,” said Cindy. “Here, it’s easy to find things in common with people and start a conversation. We’re looking forward to making this our year-round home.”

From the approachable atmosphere, to the quaint Fourth of July celebrations, there is a host of reasons that motivate the Mahls to not only live in Lakeside, but to provide financial support as well.

“Tim’s company has a matching gift program, and we take advantage of this,” said Cindy. “When we donate to the Lakeside Annual Fund, his company will match our gift. I encourage others to investigate whether the companies they work for have matching gift programs.”

Lakeside Welcomes André Thornton

Lakeside welcomes André Thornton, former Cleveland Indians first baseman, for a special event highlighting his faith journey. He will serve as the keynote speaker for Lakeside’s 2nd Annual Prayer Breakfast at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3 in Wesley Lodge.

In addition to Thornton’s story, the Prayer Breakfast will also include a testimony from Abbey Allerding, the girls’ basketball coach at North Canton Hoover High School, who leads her team to championships despite having multiple sclerosis.

In his hometown of Phoenixville, Pa., Thornton was a standout athlete. A week before his 18th birthday, he was signed as an amateur free agent for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1967. During his debut year with the Cleveland Indians in 1977, he hit 28 homeruns. His career high came a year later with 33 homeruns.

Art Show Remembers Neil Glaser

The Lakeside Art Show will display original artwork from Tuesday, July 3-Saturday, July 28 in the lobby of Hoover Auditorium.

In addition to showcasing the talent of local artists of all ages, this year’s show will feature a special retrospect of Neil Glaser, a renowned Lakesider who recently passed away. In memory of him and his many contributions, we are honored to remember him this year at the Lakeside Art Show.

Glaser worked for nearly two decades on the Art Show. He would spend hours helping to organize and hang art for each show. He was also a strong proponent for children’s art work. Recognizing that little hearts and hands are capable of great beauty, he understood the power and impact that art can have on a child’s life.
