Tips for Sustainable Housing in Lakeside

Staff Blogger: Sarah Brunot, Environmental Intern

There’s no time like this year to update your cottage to sustainability standards. It’s common for many people to worry about the upfront costs associated with making environmental improvements to their cottage, however, in the long run, these changes may even provide profits.

Two members of the Lakeside Environmental Stewardship Society (LESS) have illustrated sustainable cottage practices on both newly built and older cottages.

Frank Baker’s cottage, named “The Lakeside Green Cottage,” exhibits the intersection of architecture and sustainability. The cottage was crushed by a tree in June 2009, and Baker decided to rebuild his cottage more sustainably and better than before.

A note of thanks to Dan Dudley

The Lakeside Association Board, Foundation Board, staff and community would like to thank Dan Dudley for his incredible leadership as Acting President & CFO/COO this past year.

At the helm, he held steady, navigating Lakeside through uncharted waters and supporting a team that was able to deliver a new and different season, that has been described by many Lakesiders as one of the best ever.

Dan’s belief in the staff, volunteers and community allowed Lakeside to remain strong and come together.

“I have worked together with Dan Dudley for over five years and watched as he built trust and loyalty with the staff, board and community,” said Kurt Geisheimer, Chair of the Association Board. “Many times, I marveled as he brought order out of chaos and this summer is no exception. Dan is the finest operational leader that I have had an opportunity to work with, both in my career and volunteer work. Thank you, Dan for being a person of integrity and a humble servant leader for Lakeside.”

Hoover Auditorium new grand drape

Typically, Lakeside Chautauqua presents more than 70 live performances each summer in historic Hoover Auditorium, including chart-topping artists, professional dancers, symphony musicians, magicians, comedians and other family entertainment.

Even though we are unable to use Hoover Auditorium this season, we are excited to offer diverse cultural arts performances at Hoover for many Chautauqua seasons to come. When we do return to Hoover, a new grand drape and an enhanced experience for guests and performers awaits us.

Thanks to generous donations from Dwight and Alice King, the Skolnik and Addy families, and Lakesiders in memory of Keith and Gwen Addy, the Hoover grand drape and blackout curtains have been replaced.

A message from Lakeside Chautauqua’s President & CEO, Daniel Rogers

My first experience at Lakeside, more than 15 years ago, was in the dead of winter. Having grown up near the lake in Lorain, Ohio, I was no stranger to the cold or the beauty of a frozen Lake Erie.

However, I wasn’t ready for the splendor of Lakeside in the winter against the backdrop of the majesty of the lake. Since that day, I’ve been honored to have many visits to Lakeside Chautauqua through all four seasons.

What has been a most recent joy, is to receive the invitation and offer to be Lakeside Chautauqua’s next President & CEO. What an exceptional offer and what an exceptional place that is arguably the most vibrant, passionate and thoughtful community region wide. I look forward to seeing my grandkids skip, laugh and play with your grandkids.

Thank you to all who have warmed me with a welcome and acceptance that has, and is, making my transition into this role as pleasant an experience as one would hope for in a lifetime.
