A Fresh Chapter for Hotel Lakeside

One of Lakeside’s most iconic buildings will receive a refresh in 2026.

Since opening in 1875, Hotel Lakeside has been a cornerstone of the community, welcoming generations of guests and serving as the backdrop for countless memories. Last summer, the hotel marked a significant milestone with its 150th anniversary celebration.

This National Historic Landmark overlooking Lake Erie has also hosted notable visitors such as William McKinley, Rutherford B. Hayes, Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart, along with thousands of Lakesiders over the years.

More than an entryway, the hotel lobby is a gathering place where guests relax, play cards, connect with family and friends, and experience the warmth of Lakeside hospitality.

As part of the hotel’s 150th anniversary, planning began for a lobby refresh. A dedicated group of community members, Board members and staff formed the Hotel Lakeside 150th Planning Committee to guide the project, ensuring the updates honor the building’s historic character while enhancing the guest experience. Committee members include:

  • Randy Snow
  • Dale & Tina Knobel
  • Christine Grindley
  • Abbey Flecha
  • Ann Johnson
  • Doug & Susy Talbott
  • Carrie Lane
  • Catherine Edwards
  • Cindy Grimm
  • George McCormick
  • Joyce Christman
  • Celeste Williams
  • Laurie Beam
  • Pamela Rausch
  • Amy Skolnik
  • Gretchen Colon
  • Doug Adams, Capital Improvement & Business Case Taskforce Chair
  • Charles Allen

The committee brings together a broad range of perspectives, from long-time Lakesiders, including some whose parents were instrumental in The Friends of Hotel Lakeside, to younger Lakesiders. It also includes professional insights from historic preservation interior designers Lakesider Marilyn Duellman, who designed the Orchestra Hall renovation, and Marta Johns of the DLR Group, along with the expertise of individuals who have contributed to major preservation projects nationwide. This committee is another example of Lakesiders coming together to volunteer their expertise.

With planning complete, the lobby refresh is now underway. Improvements include a fresh coat of paint and updated color selections on previously painted woodwork, brightening the space.

Carpeted seating areas, the first-floor east hallway, and the staircase near the dining room will receive new carpet, while existing hardwood floors will be retained. Seating areas will also be updated with comfortable furnishings, creating a more welcoming environment for guests.

These improvements are made possible through support from Giving Tuesday 2024 and contributions during the hotel’s anniversary year. You can help support this project by making a gift at lakesideohio.com/today.
