Coffee & Cream celebrates 20th season

By Kyle Bettencourt

Coffee & Cream has been a staple of Lakeside’s downtown business district for 20 years. The quaint coffee shop, nestled on the corner of Second Street and Walnut Avenue, is known for friendly service, a classic menu and a warm atmosphere that has earned the loyalty of countless Lakesiders.

Dale and Susan Bissonette have owned Coffee & Cream for just over a decade, carrying forward the vision of Mitch and Chris Grindley, who first opened and renovated the shop. That vision was also shaped by Mitch’s parents, Dee and the late Ted Grindley, who played a significant role in the restaurant’s beginnings.

Signature touches like the iconic rocking chair mugs have been a part of the experience since day one. Beyond its offerings, what truly defines Coffee & Cream is the Bissonettes’ commitment to their values—particularly their desire to serve as a small business rooted in a faith-based community. Rather than shy away from Lakeside’s Religion Pillar, they embrace it wholeheartedly.

The Bissonettes pour back into Lakeside through actions big and small, like leading Bible studies, mentoring staff and offering service that goes beyond expectations.

Susan shared that Lakeside’s intergenerational character made it the perfect place to raise their children and now, their grandchildren. What started as a cottage retreat became a long-term investment in the community.

For Dale, Susan and their daughter-in-law Hannah, the heart of Coffee & Cream’s success lies in its staff.

Now in her sixth season as General Manager, Hannah has helped elevate the shop while staying true to its mission. She brings a mix of passion and innovation, like the Cinnamon Toast Crunch latte, which quickly became a top-selling favorite. Each season, she reminds her team to go above and beyond.

“When hiring someone, it’s better to be blessed than smart when it comes to these things,” Dale said.

Personal recommendation and word of mouth have helped the Bissonettes find culture-sustaining employees that embody cheerful, Christian service.

Whether you’re a regular whose order the baristas know by heart or someone who’s simply enjoyed a quiet moment in one of their signature rocking chairs, Coffee & Cream invites you to make it part of your Lakeside tradition.

Dale and Susan encourage everyone to bring friends, family and neighbors into the experience. After 20 years, they’re still grateful to call this one-of-a-kind community home.
