Historic Tram Tours Continue to Delight Guests

Now in its third season back after a long hiatus, Lakeside’s Historic Tram Tours remain one of the community’s favorite summer programs.

“Approximately 1,000 passengers climbed aboard the nine-passenger tram this summer, including employees and special groups,” said Laurie Beam, one of the volunteer tour guides.

Tours were offered Monday-Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. from May 27-Aug. 29, with the exception of July 4. Tickets were $5 per person, and children under age 5 rode free. Special tours were available for $75, and most tours throughout the season were filled to capacity.

This summer’s volunteer drivers included longtime Lakesiders Beam, Jim Heikes, Jeri Hoopes and Ginger Leonard. Together, they completed 129 tours, with only 13 canceled due to weather or other circumstances. Extra tours sometimes added at 3 p.m. upon request or when demand was especially high.

Passengers ranged from first-time guests to longtime Lakesiders and organized groups. Many returned for additional rides to hear new stories and perspectives from different guides. Riders consistently shared positive feedback, praising the engaging storytelling, humor and the chance to learn more about Lakeside’s rich history while exploring the grounds.

The partnership with the Lakeside Heritage Society continued to grow this season as well. Bill Nicholson led his East Lakeside Tour, an architectural tour of Camp Meeting cottages was offered, and Bret Johnson guided a tour tailored to youth.

Support from beyond the Tram Tour Team also played an important role. Brett Jackrel of Moto Electric Vehicles in Jacksonville, Florida, offered maintenance advice, and a spare tire and rim were kept on hand in case of a flat. Bob Strauss from Lakeside’s Maintenance Team oversaw the tram’s day-to-day care and operation, ensuring everything ran smoothly all season.

The Tram Tour Team extends heartfelt thanks to the many people who supported the program this season, including Administration Staff members Nancy Linn, Mary Stimmel and Olivia Lane; Supervising Staff member Steve Koenig; the Lakesider Newspaper team of Kevin Greer, Alex Stelzer and Hannah Brainard; additional support staff member Brad Hoopes; and the many riders who enjoyed the tours.

With another successful summer behind them, the Historic Tram Tours continue to offer guests and residents alike a fun and memorable way to experience Lakeside’s charm, history and community.
