Spring has arrived, and we can’t wait to welcome our Lakeside friends back for another exciting summer. To help you make the most of it, we want to share new things that Lakeside is working on to improve your experience. Family Entertainment Series in June & July
In an effort to offer convenient and kid-friendly shows in Hoover Auditorium, Lakeside is dedicating select Wednesday evenings to family-friendly performances that will start at 7:30 p.m. Highlights of this series include Doktor Kaboom! “Wheel of Science” on July 11 and Chicago Dance Crash “Hip-Hop Game Show,” an interactive dance experience for all ages, on July 18. More Convenience: Cottage Rentals Now Available Earlier
Lakeside Chautauqua Realty (LCR) has already started taking reservations for weekly summer rentals. LCR has a unique selection of cottages throughout Lakeside, ranging from historic to modern styles. Visit our website to view availability and pictures of each cottage rental.
New Program: Morning Hymns & Spirituals with Todd O’Neal
Each year, the Rev. Todd O’Neal of Allentown United Methodist Church coordinates music for the “Lakeside for Youth” camps. He has become an institutional figure for the youth that he serves. For the three Fridays from June 29-July 13 when the campers are here, the Rev. O’Neal invites all Lakesiders to join them in song and prayer.
New Program: World Affairs Dialogue
In place of the Foreign Affairs Forum, Lakeside is coordinating a World Affairs Dialogue, which will provide attendees the opportunity to participate in a discussion about current happenings in the world. Anyone with an interest in serving as a guest moderator can contact Jeanne Mauriocourt, Director of Educational Programs, at education@lakesideohio.com by April 1.
New Faces: Lakeside Symphony Orchestra Welcomes Guest Conductors in 2018
New Facility: Wellness Center
With the pool opening last summer, and construction on the Wellness Center now complete, the Grindley Aquatic & Wellness Campus will open for all to use on Saturday, May 26. The new Wellness Center includes an exercise equipment room and a large multi-purpose room for group events and wellness classes. New Addition: Memorial Garden at Chautauqua Park Entrance
The community will gather at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 27 at the Memorial Garden at Chautauqua Park to celebrate and dedicate the new entrance and recognize the generous gifts given to make this sacred space possible. At the service, the more than 40 loved ones who have been placed in the Memorial Garden will also be remembered. The newest addition to the space, the entrance and pergola off Popular Avenue, is the final phase of this project.
New Landscaping: Native Prairie Garden
As a step towards a more sustainable Lakeside, our newest landscaping project is a native prairie garden at the corner of Sixth Street and Laurel Avenue. This garden will help bring Lakeside back to its natural roots, serve as a resource to native pollinators and birds and will also be an excellent educational tool for our gardening programs.
New Facility: Pickleball Center
Lakeside was first introduced to pickleball five years ago when we lined the first pickleball court in Central Park. Since then, interest continued to grow and the number of adults, teens and children who play has increased. Multiple generations gathered daily to play and new programs were formed as a result. This past summer, a formal pickleball program was implemented, including round robin play, a weekly introduction to pickleball class and formal pickleball tournaments. These programs used the two asphalt tennis courts at the Williams Tennis Campus. The new center will be a welcomed addition mid-summer in 2018.
New Possibilities: Master Planning Community Forum
Join us at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 26 in Hoover Auditorium as members of MKSK and Lakeside present the Master Plan at a Community Forum. Presenters will also answer questions in the lobby of Hoover. After the forum, Lakesiders are invited to submit comments to be considered until Wednesday, Aug. 1. Learn a New Sport: Pickleball Clinic with Simone Jardim
Lakeside will host a Pickleball Clinic with Simone Jardim from Wednesday, July 18-Friday, July 20. Jardim is an International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association (IPTPA) certified instructor. She started playing the sport in 2015 and has since become the 5.0 Open National Champion in Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Women’s Singles; the Pro U.S. Open Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Women’s Singles Champion and many more.
New Celebration: Hoover Auditorium 90th Anniversary Exhibit
To celebrate 90 years of arts, entertainment and cultural education in Hoover Auditorium, there will be a multimedia exhibit on display from June 16-30, as well as several other celebratory events during Weeks 1 & 2. Join us in sharing and celebrating your favorite memories in one of Lakeside’s most cherished buildings.
New Education Support: Chautauqua Lecture Series
Lakeside is grateful to two generous families that are supporting the Education pillar.
Jane Austen at 200, which will explore the author’s life, works and legacy in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of her last published novel, is supported by the Knobel Family Endowment.
The Living Landscape: Observation, Design & Stewardship theme, which will feature author, photographer and landscape ethicist Rich Clarke, is supported by a Lakeside garden enthusiast. We are grateful for these families’ significant impact on the Education pillar.
New Look: Steele Memorial Bandstand/Gazebo Upgrades
Thanks to the generosity of the Lakeside community on #GivingTuesday, we’re preparing to make some much-needed renovations to this cherished space. This year, Lakeside plans to give the Gazebo fresh paint, new landscaping and a new set of benches. Over the next year, plans will be made for a new paver system.
