Preacher of the Week: Bishop Sally Dyck

Bishop Sally Dyck will serve as Lakeside’s Preacher of the Week from July 29-Aug. 2. This week is supported by the Rev. Ruth C. Shannon Endowment. She will preach at the Hoover Community Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 29 in Hoover Auditorium.

Having grown up on a farm in rural Washington state and moving frequently around the country for her career, Bishop Dyck explains her geographic history in a unique way.

“I’m from I-90,” she explains. “I-90 goes by where I was born and raised. I-90 has a ramp to Boston University where I graduated from college and Boston University School of Theology where I went to seminary. I spent 25 years of ministry as a pastor and a district superintendent in Cleveland, Ohio, and I-90 goes through that area. After I was elected a bishop in 2004, I was assigned to the Minnesota Annual Conference, and I-90 goes through the southern part of the state. I was assigned to the Northern Illinois Annual Conference in 2012 and reassigned for another four years in 2016. I walk across I-90 in order to go to my office at the Temple/First United Methodist Church in Chicago. I’m from I-90!

Since coming to Northern Illinois, Bishop Dyck has worked to help the Northern Illinois Conference strengthen its capacity to fulfill its purpose: “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by equipping its local churches for ministry and by providing a connection for ministry beyond the local church; all to the glory of God.”

Believing that an inward focus is the greatest threat to a local church, Bishop Dyck works to help churches grow in their engagement with their communities, bringing joy to their cities and towns.

She also serves as the President of the General Board of Church & Society for The United Methodist Church and is a member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches.

During her week at Lakeside, Bishop Dyck will preach at 9:15 a.m. Monday-Thursday during Faith for Living Hour in Orchestra Hall. At 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, she will lead Vespers by the Lake, held on the Pavilion East Deck.

For those who wish to attend worship, a complimentary Church Pass may be obtained between 7:30-10:30 a.m. Sunday; valid until 3 p.m. A complimentary Faith for Living Hour Pass is available between 8:30-9:15 a.m. Monday-Thursday; valid until 1:30 p.m. Both passes include admission to Lakeside for guests and auto, but not access to the Grindley Aquatic & Wellness Campus.
