Women’s Club full of activities for the summer

The Lakeside Women’s Club is ready to go with a full slate of programs and activities. If you are spending a few days, a week, or the whole summer in Lakeside, come by Green Gables (161 Walnut Ave.) the Lakeside Women’s Club’s “Grand Old Lady” and enjoy the many offerings.  

Monday at 10 a.m., “Women Reading Through the Bible” meets to discuss a book of the Bible. During the Pandemic, when only Bible Studies could meet in person, this Bible Study was initiated. It will probably take five summers to read through the whole Bible, but each week there is a lively discussion on a book of the Bible led by Jeri Hoopes and Jane Linville. A Meet and Greet will be June 5, and then Esther will be the first book discussed June 12.

Two Book Discussion Groups meet at Green Gables on alternate Mondays: The Breakfast Bunch at 8:30 a.m. and the After Lunch Bunch at 1:30 p.m. The first Book, The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles, will be discussed June 12 at 1:30 p.m. Prior reading of the books is required.

The LWC Porch Stories will meet July 3, July 17,  Aug. 7, and Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Green Gables. This program, hosted by M.A. Stephens is based on the PBS program “The Moth Hour” and Catherine Burns’ book The Moth.

Tuesday afternoon LWC programs begin at 1:30 June 13 and include “Voices from the Ape House,” “Golden Retrievers in Need,” “Growing and Enjoying Herbs,” a “Portrayal of Ohio First Lady Crete Garfield,” “A History of the Federation of Women’s Clubs” and “Walt Whitman and the Civil War” followed by delicious refreshments. There are also interactive programs to get to know each other. The Annual Luncheon will be Aug. 15 at the Hotel.

Bridge will be Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. Mah Jongg will be Mondays and Fridays at 3 p.m., Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m., and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome.

To celebrate Lakeside’s Sesquicentennial this year, the Friday afternoon Book Reviews at 1:30 will feature books from each decade: 1910-2000, starting June 23 with What Were They Reading? 1910-1999?. Prior reading is not required to attend the Book Reviews.

All women, men and children are invited to visit the LWC Library at Green Gables to check out books and puzzles or to purchase used books. Librarian Barbara Hoffman is at the LWC Library from 1-3 p.m., or you can come and browse between 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

There’s also a small thrift shop, The Corner Cupboard, where donated items can be purchased. There are no prices, just a box for “donations.”

This year, the popular Cottage Tour will include sheds and quilts July 27 from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Lakesiders and guests can tour six cottages, sheds, outhouses and view quilts hung from cottages. A special Gate and Car Pass is available for $20. The new tram will provide transportation around Lakeside.

Upstairs at Green Gables there are five bedrooms available for women over 18 years old to rent. Four of the bedrooms have two twin beds for $80 a night. One room has a single bed for $60 a night. There is a kitchenette, microwave, refrigerator and a shared bathroom. Groups of high school friends, Bible Studies and sisters love staying at Green Gables.

The Lakeside Women’s Club donates knitted blankets to the Salvation Army and sews doll clothes for American Girl dolls at Ronald McDonald houses. When a child come to a Ronald McDonald House, they can receive a doll with a bag of doll clothes including pajamas, robe, dress, slacks, top and knitted hat. The Sew-a-Thon will be in August and September at the Rhein Center. There is also a basket in Green Gables for non-perishable items and personal products that are donate to the Danbury Food Pantry.

Three Janet Jennings Memorial Scholarships from the Lakeside Women’s Club are awarded to Lakeside students each summer. Applications may be picked up at Green Gables.

Membership includes a booklet with all the activities listed day by day, weekly emails and notifications of special events.
