Lakeside’s history and special community character are made evident for all to see and enjoy in its cottages and Chautauqua buildings. The Lakeside Association Board of Directors has codified our community’s commitment to carrying its past into the future in preservation rules and regulations. The Board appoints a panel of Lakesiders to serve as Historic Preservation & Design Review Board (HPDRB) members with the charge of working with property owners to apply our preservation standards.
Each year, the HPDRB identifies several recently-approved projects to highlight for our Lakeside community. The 2022 Preservation Awards bring attention to particularly successful applications of our Lakeside historic preservation rules and regulations. Recognition certificates were distributed to award recipients at the Aug. 13 Lakeside Property Owners Association meeting, and yard signs identify the recognized properties.
This year, the HPDRB made two Cottage Renovation Awards. Eugene and Nancy Jacob were recognized for their restoration of 443 Walnut Ave., and Marcia Steele and Rustin Levenson were featured for their renovation of 161 Oak Ave.
The HPRDB made two awards for Preservation & Maintenance Using Original Materials that honors late Lakesider Ron Leffler. Don and Melissa Monich were honored for their success in preserving 345 Sycamore Ave., and David and Meredith Workman were recognized for their restoration of their cottage at 432 E. Second St.
The HPDRB made an award in the category of Landscaping to Nick Beck and Kim Chiodi, who were recognized for a landscape and hardscape plan at 235 East Fourth St.
Finally, the board made an award in the category of New Construction to Mark and Mitch Grindley for three adjacent cottages at 323 East Sixth St., 552 Laurel Ave., and 546 Laurel Ave., now sold to Lakeside families.
