After many years of dedicated service to Lakeside, Bill Smith is moving on and selling his Lakeside home. He and his wife, Linda, will return next season, but only for a few weeks.
Throughout his time at Lakeside, Bill has made a lasting impact on the programs and organizations, particularly through his passion for trees. For about 20 years, he led more than 80 Tree Walks in Bettinger Park, Perry Park and near the Train Station, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with countless guests.

As the first and only Chair of the Lakeside Tree Advisory Committee for nearly 15 years, Bill guided decisions about where to plant trees and which species would thrive. He personally visited nurseries, ordered trees and ensured they were planted and watered properly.
Under his leadership, at least 300 trees were planted, and he oversaw the pruning or removal of many others. Each fall, he often pruned trees himself and advised homeowners on their tree plantings and care.
Over time, Bill developed a professional level of expertise in arbor science, particularly in identifying species best suited to thrive and benefit Lakeside.

Thanks to his efforts, Lakeside has proudly been named a Tree City USA for 14 consecutive years, with Bill organizing and applying for the award annually.
He also recognized the importance of Lakeside’s tree canopy and the challenges posed by aging or poorly suited trees. Using his background as a scientific researcher, he studied arbor science in depth and built strong relationships with Lakeside and the Lakeside Chautauqua Foundation to secure support for new plantings.
Today, Bill’s legacy is evident throughout Lakeside in the tree canopy that will continue to benefit the community for generations to come.
