This summer’s Religious Life seminar series on Christian Biographies at the Train Station will explore the lives and thought of four prominent Christians who shared their message at Lakeside during its 150-year history.
Phoebe Worrall Palmer
On Monday, July 17 at 3 p.m., we will discuss Phoebe Worrall Palmer, who spoke at Lakeside during the dedication camp meeting in 1874. Arguably the most significant woman preacher of the 19th century, Palmer’s story is one touched by both tragedy and total commitment to Jesus Christ. We will discuss her life and her contributions to theological thought in America. Dan Moulton will lead this seminar which will consist of both lecture and small group discussion.
Moulton was raised on the Marblehead Peninsula and retired here with his wife, Dia, in 2018. Prior to retirement, he spent 39 years in Michigan where he worked in various engineering positions at General Motors. In addition to degrees in physics/math from Heidelberg College and engineering from The Ohio State University, Moulton studied business at the University of Michigan and holds a graduate diploma in Christian studies from Ashland Theological Seminary. He enjoys adult teaching and has particular interests in historical theology and the intersection of science and religion.
Howard Thurman
On Wednesday, July 19 at 3 p.m. we will explore the life Howard Thurman, who has been referred to as the moral anchor for the civil rights movement in America. Heralded as both a great unifier and a 20th century Christian mystic, Thurman’s thought and writings continue to speak powerfully to the heart of American social ethics. We will discuss Thurman’s life and reflect on his call to seek common ground. Moulton will lead this seminar which will consist of both lecture and small group discussion.
