The Kite Shop celebrates 40th Anniversary

By Christy Nicolaisen
Director, The GOD’S CHILD Project

The Kite Shop, a beloved local institution, is marking four decades of soaring success this summer.
Founded by Will and Kim Honeycutt, the shop has become a cherished part of the Lakeside community. But this anniversary isn’t just about kites and celebration — it’s about making a difference.

A Partnership with purpose
The Kite Shop is more than just a retail destination, it’s a beacon of goodwill. For several years, the Honeycutt family has been committed to supporting The GOD’S CHILD Project (GCP), an organization dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children and families in Guatemala, India and the United States.

In 2017, the Honeycutts began sponsoring a child through GCP’s program. Their compassion didn’t stop there. In 2023 and 2024, Will led two ServiceTeams to Antigua, Guatemala, where they built homes for families in desperate need. These homes, constructed in just three days, provide safe and dignified shelter for families facing adversity.

Impact beyond borders
The Honeycutts’ involvement extends beyond housing. They’ve actively participated in GCP’s other initiatives in Guatemala. Their contributions include volunteering at the Hospital for Malnourished Babies and assisting with the weekly food distribution program. Through these efforts, they’ve touched the lives of countless individuals, providing nourishment, hope and healing.

Celebrating 40 years
As The Kite Shop celebrates its 40th Anniversary, the community is invited to join the festivities. The anniversary celebration will continue through Labor Day, offering visitors a chance to explore the shop’s colorful array of T-shirts and accessories. Located at the Pavilion, The Kite Shop remains a testament to the Honeycutts’ unwavering commitment to both their business and their philanthropic endeavors.

Patrick Atkinson, Founder and Executive Director of GCP, expressed his gratitude: “It is wonderful that the Honeycutts and other volunteers are helping us save lives and give hope to those that need it most.”
