Lakesider News

What is the very essence that keeps people returning to this sacred place?

By Bill & Nancy Carlson

So many times, we hear “When we come through the gates, something happens — our shoulders relax, we audibly sigh, our eyes scan the restful scene … and we smile.”

What brings us to Lakeside? Family, friends, Hoover programs, kids running free, shopping at Marilyn’s, the Farmers’ Market, a beautiful lake —each of us looking forward to a favorite place.

It’s a time to pause and reflect on where we are in life and where we want to be. And all of this is because some bearded gentlemen in 1873 decided that these shoreline acres would be a place to come in the summer to enrich our souls.

They came by ship; we arrive in shiny cars and trucks. They settled in tents; we enjoy cottages and year-round houses. They wore long dresses and Sunday suits; we ramble about in T-shirts and shorts.

And yet for many, the appeal is the same as then— a faith-based, family-friendly enclave, and now a place to also embrace the arts, learn new things, run and swim or just relax on the porch. For each of us, Lakeside sings an enchanting song that brings us back—year after year after year.
