Ted Hough Celebrates 20 Years at Hoover Auditorium

Hoover Crew 1You may not know him by name, but if you have spent any time attending Hoover evening performances, you will recognize him, or at least the back of his head.

Ted Hough, Hoover Auditorium Audio Engineer & Technical Director, will mark his 20th anniversary of working in Hoover this week. His first show was a concert by The Grass Roots on June 29, 1996, and he has been here every summer since.

Hough started as the sound engineer and quickly became the go-to person when it came to knowledge of, and experience in, Lakeside’s historic theatre.

His arrival at Lakeside was a bit unusual. Keith Addy, former Director of Hoover Programming, tells the story this way, “Some 20 years ago, the sound engineer had to leave unexpectedly for personal reasons. I hired Dan Canalos from a company called Soundwaves to fill in until a more permanent technician could be recruited. Ted was brought in to work one of the events, and ended up signing on as sound engineer for the next season. The rest is history.”

Life for Lakeside

Staff Blogger: Josh Hilgenberg, Advancements/Communications Intern

Hoover Auditorium - CopyThe Endowment for Life Initiative was launched in 2012. Its goal is to raise the endowment to $12 million by 2023 and emphasize deferred giving – pledging an endowment gift or naming Lakeside as a beneficiary in an estate, IRA or life insurance policy.

As it stands now, the endowment sits at $5.5 million, a good start, but clearly there is work to be done in the next seven years if we want to hit our goal.

This may seem like a fair amount, but it’s not representative of a 143-year old organization with programming in four Chautauqua pillars and historic structures averaging 80 years old.

Much of the reason why these buildings still stand is because of the endowment. Finances are drawn from it to perform maintenance, upkeep and repairs when necessary.

Hotel Lakeside, Hoover Auditorium and almost every other building on the grounds are held up with these funds.

The performances that are held in Hoover, the lectures that echo in Chautauqua Hall and Orchestra Hall  these, along with many other programming events, are able to happen because of the endowment.

It may not seem to affect us, but imagine Lakeside without all these things.

Staff Blogger: Alexandria Digby, Marketing & Graphic Design Manager

IMG_1133A key charm of Lakeside is its natural beauty. Keeping the flowers fed and the grass green is a full-time job for Lakeside’s new Master Gardener, Loretta Wilkin.

Every day, Wilkin makes her rounds to keep up with the various gardens, flower beds and potted plants scattered across Lakeside.

“My primary work is watering, weeding, pruning and cleaning up the gardens between the Fifth Street entrance, the South Gate entrance, the Williams Tennis Campus and Chautauqua Park’s Memorial Garden,” she said.

Before taking on this position at Lakeside, Wilkin held several gardening or horticultural jobs. She spent many years at Corso’s Flower & Garden Center in Sandusky, Ohio working in transplanting and production, garden center sales, flower shop management, giftware buying, retail sales and customer service in the greenhouse.

“Gardening is a nurturing, challenging and rewarding experience,” she said. “I enjoy the beauty of such an amazing diversity of plants.”
