What’s Trending in Food this Week? Ice Cream

Staff Blogger:  Alexis Oatman, Advancement/ Communications Intern

Ice cream has been around since the reign of the Romans, but now that summer is upon us, ice cream is the staple of the season.

Here at Lakeside, there are several places you can find this chilled delicacy – Coffee & Cream, The Patio Restaurant, Whistle Stop, Dockside and Ooh La La!

Coffee & Cream

IMG_8347Coffee & Cream, across from The Fine Print bookstore, is known for their coffee and delicious ice cream. Popular flavors are soft-serve orange/vanilla twist, Raspberry Fudge Cordial and Raspberry Fudge Truffle.

A soft-serve cone costs about $1.90, and the Velvet brand hand-dipped ice cream is $3.45 for a single scoop or $4.25 for a double scoop. For little Lakesiders, a junior cone is $2.85. Sprinkles are free, but other toppings cost 10 cents.

Coffee & Cream also offers yummy milkshakes, floats and soft-serve ice cream with a shot of espresso on top.

Pool & Wellness Center Update – July 1, 2016

Since the Pool & Wellness Center idea began, the Lakeside staff, boards and Pool & Wellness Community Taskforce have, appropriately, received a multitude of questions about what lies on the horizon.

We would like to begin by thanking Lakesiders for taking a vested interest in the future.

What will the whole thing look like?

Walking into the facility from E. Sixth St., there is a small set of stairs and a ramp with a patio area reminiscent of Hoover Auditorium.

The building has two spaces, one on the left and one on the right. The left is a concession area. The space on the right is a lifeguard office, as well as a restroom area that is accessible at all times of the day, even when the pool itself is closed.

Walking forward, is the 6,500 sq. foot pool, capable of holding more than 400 swimmers. The deck around the pool has a capacity of approximately 1,600 individuals.

Strolling along the right side of the pool is another building, which includes a security office, restrooms and changing room, as well as a mechanical room containing pumps for the pool and other such items.

South of the pool sits the wellness center, housing two multipurpose rooms and an equipment room. The wellness center also has another restroom, along with plenty of storage.

We are happy to assure Lakesiders that the vast majority of trees we are accustomed to seeing in the area will remain as well, meaning that anyone using the  facility will be able to look out either over the pool or the nature surrounding the center.

Celebrate Fourth of July in Lakeside

Lakeside is home to many traditions, but there’s none quite like the Fourth of July celebration that takes place every year. Families line the sidewalks down Second Street to watch the parades, and then move their chairs down by the waterfront to save their seat for the spectacular firework show at night. It’s a celebration unlike any other and there are plenty of events for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Children’s Bike Parade & Float Parade

Parade2013Lakeside Chautauqua’s Fourth of July celebration begins at 10 a.m. Monday, July 4 with the Children’s Bike Parade in Perry Park. Participants of all ages should arrive early with an already-decorated bike. As the parade passes, please pick up children along the parade route or on the north end of Maple Avenue near Hotel Lakeside.

Following the bike parade will be the Fourth of July Float Parade at 10:15 a.m. Both parades will travel west on Second Street and will occur come rain or shine. Spectators are invited to dress patriotically as part of this Lakeside holiday tradition.

Grand Marshal

This year’s Grand Marshal will be Tom Edwards, Lakeside Executive Director from 1981-1988. As a Port Clinton native, he spent many childhood summers in Lakeside. Under his leadership, Lakeside saw significant milestones and achievements, including being named to the National Register’s Historic Districts and the restoration of the Pavilion, along with many other buildings.

This Year’s Fourth of July Parade Grand Marshal: Tom Edwards

Staff Blogger: Lexie Digby, Marketing & Graphic Design Manager

Tom Edwards editedThe Grand Marshal for this year’s Fourth of July Float Parade will be Tom Edwards, who served as Lakeside Executive Director from 1981-1988, a very transformational time in Lakeside’s history.

Edwards was born in Bay City, Mich. in 1939, grew up in nearby Port Clinton and spent summers at Lakeside as a child. He attended Bowling Green State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business, as well as his Master of Business Administration. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant in Fort Gordon, Ga.

During summers while in college, he opened and owned Tom’s Toggery, a clothing store in Lakeside, which he operated until he joined the Army. This was the beginning of a successful career that would continue when his time with the Army was completed in 1963.

In 1965, he moved to Monroe, La., to work for Cable Television Marketing, a job which later moved him to Florence, S.C. In 1966, Edwards married Debby Young, whom he met in Lakeside several years earlier. Like Edwards, Debby grew up spending her summers in Lakeside at the Young family cottage on the corner of Fourth Street and Elm Avenue. Edwards lost his beloved Debby to cancer in 2011.
