Teach Children about Giving Back on #GivingTuesday

Staff Blogger: Jessica Kidd, Director of Annual Giving

As Lakeside Chautauqua joins #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving on November 29, 2016, we invite you to share the spirit of giving with your own children or grandchildren.

Teaching a younger generation about the power of giving is as simple as showing them how in real and tangible ways.

Include giving as part of your holiday conversation, and identify ways you can give to others as a family. The memories of these acts of kindness will last a lifetime.

Help Lakeside Make a ‘Hole-in-One’ Today on #GivingTuesday

Mini-Golf - 2#GivingTuesday is finally here! Already, generous families have been inspired to celebrate this national day of giving to support enhancements to the miniature golf course.

For more than 51 years, the miniature golf course has been a gathering place for families to celebrate each hole-in-one victory and to reconnect along the lake. The laughter and cheers from players of all ages can be heard across the putting greens.

Over the years, the huge volume of families has put wear and tear on the historic facility. There are many repairs that need to be made.

DSC_2693-2Dear Friends,

The seasons are changing in Lakeside Chautauqua. Snow is falling all over the campus, especially at the miniature golf course.

I was out just the other day with my dear friend, the Bright Yellow Golf Ball.

Underneath the snow, we noticed that the concrete is sinking at the mini-golf course, and water is running into the holes. The bumpers are rotting slightly and will need to be replaced soon. Some of the obstacles are also deteriorating. I know putting greens wear quickly, and some are worn more than others at Lakeside.

#GivingTuesday Encourages a Tradition of Generosity at Lakeside Chautauqua

photoOn December 2, 2014, Lakeside Chautauqua will partner with #GivingTuesday for the second year. The purpose of this special day of giving is to encourage a tradition of generosity during the holiday season, which coincides with family celebrations and holiday shopping.

Through the launch of our #GivingTuesday initiative to enhance the recreation pillar, many community members have offered to tell their Lakeside stories. These stories share how enhancements to the Lakeside miniature golf course will continue to bring families and friends across multiple generations closer together.

For families, like the Smiths, the miniature golf course has been a part of their renewal experience for many years. In 1972, Steven Smith accepted a seasonal position to work alongside his brother, Dave, and Frank Floding at the Lakeside miniature golf course.

A Brief History of Miniature Golf at Lakeside

MiniatureGolfHut_Week_1_Patterson781The simple and fun recreational game of miniature golf has been a part of the Lakeside Chautauqua experience for more than 50 years.

In 1963, under the leadership of Lakeside’s Executive Director, George Beebe, the miniature golf course was built in Central Park. Sitting only 50 feet from the shoreline, the location and tree canopy make the course pleasant, even in the heat of a sunny, summer day.

The great game, played on the greens with a putter and brightly colored golf ball, added to the array of recreational activities at Lakeside long ago, and still remains a treasured experience today.

McKinneyAs we know, the Chautauqua experience is based upon the exploration and enrichment of life through four pillars: religion, education, cultural arts and recreation. Each pillar provides opportunities for Lakesiders of all ages to grow mentally, physically and spiritually.

For Lakesiders like Tom McKinney, the Chautauqua experience has been an important part of his life.

McKinney’s first memory of Lakeside is running along the dock during the hot and sunny summer days. The lakefront was a place he spent much of his time.

Also, near the lakefront was Central Park, the center for vibrant colors; a place where Lakesiders of all ages cheered with excitement and children often cried out “Did you see that, Mom and Dad? A hole-in-one!” McKinney too was attracted to the miniature golf course.

Mini-Golf - 2Lakeside Chautauqua has joined #GivingTuesday, a national day of giving.

Taking place on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, #GivingTuesday harnesses the collective power of non-profits, families, business and individuals to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

To celebrate this day of giving, Lakeside is introducing an initiative that supports the Chautauqua pillar of recreation.

Built in the 1960s, Lakeside’s miniature golf course is a multi-generational tradition. Each summer, families gather for tournaments and afternoons of fun along the waterfront.
